Using gamdl to get music on my garmin

December 26, 2025 — Jesse Harris

gamdl is a downloader for apple music subscribers.

First step:

Install gamdl. I'm doing this from a debian derivative so, I'm starting with installing it via pipx

    sudo apt install -y pipx
    pipx install gamdl

This is supposed to be all you need, but I had to have some other binaries or I was getting an encryption error.

From the gamdl github page follow the instructions to download and setup mp4box and nm3u8dlre.

You will also need to grab a cookies.txt from your apple sign in. Go ahead and login to music.apple.com/au from your fav browser. Also go and grab a cookies.txt extension. Here is one I found for chrome: cookies.txt

Once on the apple music page find the album you want. It's important to find the album directly in Apple Music and not in your library.

Modify ~/.gamdl/config.ini as needed.

Copy the url and run:

    gamdl <url>
